3 Simple Ways to Sleep Better
Ever wonder why some nights you seem to fall asleep and other nights you toss and turn and can’t get to sleep no matter what you do?
Well, it has everything to do with a tiny gland in your brain, about the size of a grain of rice. It’s called your Pineal Gland and it produces the hormone Melatonin, which has everything with how deeply and how long you sleep.
Rene Descartes, a famous philosopher, called this pine-coned shaped gland the “principle seat of the soul”. It has also been called the Third Eye because it gets its nerve supply partially from the optic ganglion. This gland regulates our daily circadian rhythms, but also our seasonal ones; so it has a lot to do with our hormone levels, our stress levels and our physical performance.
There are a few ways to stimulate this all important, but often neglected gland.
1. Enjoy the Sun
Exposure to the Sun, either directly or indirectly, stimulates the production of Serotonin levels, which has an effect on our mood and our energy levels. Fifteen minutes in the morning and the same in the evening, on a daily basis is sufficient to have a lasting effect.
2. Sleep in Complete Darkness
Complete darkness allows the body to produce melatonin, thereby ensuring a good night’s sleep. Keep all electronics out of the bedroom. Lights from cell phones, Ipads, computers, TVs and the like disrupt our sleep because they interfere with melatonin production.
The pineal gland responds to peace and tranquility. In fact, life is often so hectic that allowing ourselves several minutes of rest at any time of the day is often a good thing and can be beneficial on so many levels.
